Edublogs

Much of what we’ve learned over the last few years has been down to edublogs.

Not only does the site host blogs for tens of thousands of bloggers, but it does so using our custom split database code, working across several highly customized servers and producing fantastic response times.

As well as all the cool plugins, themes and and other user-based functionality we’ve installed - we also provide avatars, social networking functionality, global tagging and aggregation, popularity rankings (incorporating avatars)… and that’s just on the front end.

In the back there’s no end of extra admin functionality, including massively enhanced user tracking, mass email functionality (which scales to millions of blogs), advertising tools, splog protection, site maintenance tools, batch user creation functions, and much more.

Probably the best thing about the site though is the Premium functionality, which has enabled it to go from a past-time to a fully functioning business. Users can subscribe for extra storage, their own URLs, premium plugins and more, as well as simply donating to the site.
